Our new UM Health-Sparrow Maternal Fetal Medicine practice provides a complete teamwork approach to care for all needs of high-risk pregnant mothers during their journey. Our goals are to support mothers during their pregnancies aiming at the best outcome for both the mother and the baby.

We offer many services to help our expectant parents throughout each pregnancy journey including detailed ultrasound examinations, genetic testing and counseling, and consultation services related to medical conditions that may affect a pregnancy such as diabetes, preeclampsia, or concern for fetal growth, and development. We have the only level III Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (RNICU) in the region, and parents can feel assured that help is always ready to provide care to the babies born as early as 23 weeks of gestation. The UM Health-Sparrows Children’s Center has a wide range of Pediatric Subspecialties available to make sure your child is receiving the best possible care here in Lansing.

What is a “high-risk” pregnancy? A pregnancy that is facing a medical challenge and would need additional attention and care to lead to safe and healthy mother and baby.

What are some of the conditions that would make a pregnancy high-risk?

• Conditions affecting the mother such as multiple pregnancies, advanced maternal age, premature birth history, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, preeclampsia, epilepsy or seizure, cancer, asthma, etc.
• Conditions affecting the baby  such as ultrasound findings like birth defects or growth restriction, genetic concerns, etc.
• Conditions affecting the placenta
• Or any condition that requires high risk care or treatment of the fetus
