Shahrzad (Shari) R. Brown, MD, is a Breast Surgical Oncologist at UM Health-Sparrow Hospital. Dr. Brown was born and raised in California and received a B.S. in Molecular and Environmental Biology from the University of California Berkeley and completed General Surgery residency at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland in Pontiac, MI. She is board certified by the American Board of Surgery. Dr. Brown left Michigan to complete a Breast Surgical Oncology fellowship at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Here she participated in cutting edge research and presented her research nationally at the American Society of Breast Surgeons conference. Her research findings were described in the General Surgery News and published in Annals of Surgical Oncology.
Dr. Brown returned to Michigan to bring the expertise from her university center training to our patients. Her surgical and research interests are in clinical trials, oncoplastic techniques, breast cancer related lymphedema, high risk patient populations, as well as benign and malignant breast disease. She also has a passion for resident education
Sandra Butcher, MSN, NP-BC is a board-certified nurse practitioner who has spent over 20 years in general and acute care surgical specialties. She has been affiliated with UM Health-Sparrow Health Systems and Michigan State University for the last 10 years, during which she has been directly involved in resident education as well as the provision of high quality patient care. Before coming to UM Health-Sparrow, Sandra graduated with honors from U of M Flint with a Masters in Nursing Science and obtained a Family Nurse Practitioner certification, prior to her employment at UM Health-Sparrow she worked in the operating room and general surgery service at Owosso. Sandra is a member of professional organizations MICNP and ANCC. She is certified in ACLS, PALS and CNOR. Her outside interests include the newly evolving field of functional medicine and nutrition.
Thais Fortes, M.D., is a Gynecologic Surgeon who specializes in management of breast diseases. She earned her medical degree from Universidade Federal do Piaui, Brazil. Dr. Fortes underwent Obstetrics and Gynecology residency and Breast Surgery fellowship in her home country prior to moving to the U.S.
Following her relocation, Dr. Fortes completed an Obstetrics and Gynecology residency at UM Health-Sparrow Hospital – Michigan State University. After residency, she completed a Society of Surgical Oncology Breast Surgical Fellowship at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY.
Dr. Fortes is a passionate advocate for comprehensive wellness in women’s cancer care. She is a member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Society of Breast Surgeons, and the Society of Surgical Oncology.
David Hagan, M.D. FACS, earned a Bachelor of Art degree in Biology from Albion College and completed Medical School at the University of Michigan. He completed his general surgical residency at Fairview General Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Hagan is a Fellow with the American College of Surgeons.
Lauren Kwasny, D.O. is a general surgeon, born and raised in Michigan. Dr. Kwasny completed her undergraduate studies at Western Michigan University with a double degree in Biomedical Sciences and Psychology. She went on to pursue medical training at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic medicine. Following medical school, she completed her residency at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo.
She is available to treat a broad range of surgical conditions utilizing advanced techniques including laparoscopy, Endoscopy at UM Health-Sparrow Lansing at UM Health-Sparrow Lansing at UM Health-Sparrow Lansing, and robotic surgery. Conditions treated include maladies of the gallbladder, appendix, breast, small and large bowel, and hernia/abdominal wall.
Dr. Kwasny has a special interest in diseases affecting the endocrine system including thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal disease.
Jonathan Levy, MD, MS is a board-certified General Surgeon originally from Denver, Colorado. He earned his MD from Albany Medical College in NY before going on to complete a General Surgery internship at the University of Vermont, and a General Surgery residency at Allegheny Health Network in Pittsburgh, PA. He continued on to complete a Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) fellowship at Allegheny Health Network, focusing on Esophageal and Gastric Surgery/Advanced Upper Endoscopy at UM Health-Sparrow Lansing at UM Health-Sparrow Lansing at UM Health-Sparrow Lansing.
Dr. Levy is available to treat a wide variety of surgical conditions, with a focus on minimally-invasive surgery techniques such as laparoscopy, Endoscopy at UM Health-Sparrow Lansing at UM Health-Sparrow Lansing at UM Health-Sparrow Lansing, and robotic surgery. He has a particular passion for treating esophageal and gastric conditions such as GERD, hiatal hernia, paraesophageal hernia, achalasia, gastroparesis, and Barrett’s Esophagus.
Hugh Lindsey, M.D., FACS, a Certified Physician Executive, leads the Lansing General Surgery practice. He is board-certified in General Surgery with 20 years of broad-based general surgery experience and performs a wide array of minimally invasive as well as GI endoscopic procedures.
Dr. Lindsey earned his medical degree from the University of Toledo College of Medicine in Toledo, Ohio, completed his general surgery residency training at Michigan State University and interned at the Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia.
Before coming to Lansing General Surgery Lansing he served as Chief Medical Officer for Hayes Green Beach Memorial Hospital in Charlotte.
KhangHy D Nguyen, D.O., FACOS, FACS, graduated from the Michigan State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2004 and completed his surgical residency at McLaren Greater Lansing in 2009. He is a board-certified general surgeon providing a broad range of surgical care including minimally invasive procedures and Endoscopy at UM Health-Sparrow Lansing at UM Health-Sparrow Lansing at UM Health-Sparrow Lansing.
After completing his residency, Dr. Nguyen fulfilled his Health Professional Scholarship duties by serving active duty in the United States Air Force at Joint Base Andrews until his honorable discharge in 2013. As an active duty surgeon, he completed two tours of duty to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Before coming to UM Health-Sparrow, he previously served as Assistant Chief of Surgery for the Mid-Atlantic Permanente Group covering the northern Virginia area.
Long Nguyen, M.D. completed his undergraduate degree at the University of California, Irvine, graduating cum laude with a degree in Biological Sciences. He then attended Saint Louis University School of Medicine, where he earned his medical degree. Afterwards, he progressed to general surgery residency at Spectrum Health/MSU in Grand Rapids, MI. Dr. Nguyen treats a wide variety of conditions, with special interest in advanced laparoscopic procedures.
Kosisochi Obinwanne, M.D., is a minimally invasive surgeon who has dedicated his career to performing bariatric and general surgical procedures, such as: cholecystectomy, hernia repairs, stomach intestinal and colon surgery, appendectomy and splenectomy.
A board-certified General Surgeon by the American Board of Surgery, Dr. Obinwanne graduated in 2001 from the University of Ibadan College of Medicine in Nigeria, completed his general surgery residency at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center in South Carolina, and his fellowship training in Bariatric Surgery/General Surgery at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in Wisconsin.
Lewis G. Rashid, M.D., completed his undergraduate degree at Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Science with Honors. He earned his medical degree at Wayne State University School of Medicine and proceeded to complete his general surgery training at the Michigan State University Integrated General Surgery Residency.
Dr. Rashid has special interest in minimally invasive surgery including robotics, advanced laparoscopic, and advanced Endoscopy at UM Health-Sparrow Lansing at UM Health-Sparrow Lansing at UM Health-Sparrow Lansing. He also performs a wide variety of surgery including thyroid, breast, foregut and hindgut surgery, biliary, abdominal wall reconstruction and hernia repair, and acute care surgery.
Kara Spenski, NP-C, is a board-certified nurse practitioner with over a decade of nursing experience amongst long-term care, acute care, and diverse surgical experience in medical-surgical nursing at UM Health-Sparrow Hospital. Her career began in 2008 as a Licensed Practical Nurse and continued by completing her Bachelor of Science in Nursing as well as obtaining the Medical-Surgical Certification through the Academy of Med-Surg Nurses. Kara then completed her Master of Science in Nursing with honors at Spring Arbor University specializing as a Nurse Practitioner. She is a current member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and Academy of Med-Surg Nurses. Kara is certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Basic Life Support, and Medical-Surgical Nursing.
