The Sparrow Women’s Board of Managers and Sparrow Volunteer Services Department have named Linda Woodrow of Okemos the September Volunteer of the Month. Woodrow has been volunteering for Sparrow for over 8 years in the Hello Hospital group and the Sparrow Surgical Lounge.
The Hello Hospital group brings first grade students from area schools into the hospital for a positive and learning experience. Woodrow schedules the groups, the other volunteers needed and suggests improvements as needed. She is perfect for this group since she has an education degree from the City College of New York and M.S.U. and has taught in Harlem, Maryland and Dansville, Michigan, where she spent the majority of her career. She also worked for the M.S.U. Institute for Research of Teaching and wrote their research newsletter.
In the Surgical Lounge, Woodrow serves as secretary and newsletter editor putting out the informative monthly newsletter accurately and on time, even after breaking an arm.
She also was president of the Ingham County Reading Association and wrote the newsletter for parents of preschoolers.
Woodrow grew up in New York City and came to the Lansing area with her husband, Michael’s job. They have two children and 4 grandchildren.
She enjoys the theater, good dining, reading, and belongs to book clubs. They like to travel to Chicago, California and Rhode Scholar trips as well as Europe and cruises.
Woodrow also volunteers at Congregation Shaarey Zedek where she met Dr. Steve Geurtin who suggested she come to Sparrow to volunteer in the pediatric department. She ended up in Hello Hospital where she loves the people, especially the children.
Woodrow is said to represent the high quality of a Sparrow volunteer who gives meaningful community service.
