The Sparrow Women’s Board of Managers and the Sparrow Volunteer Services Department have named Maureen Price-Zalba the November Volunteer of the Month. Price-Zalba has been volunteering in Hospice for over 5 years having come from volunteering at the Mother Teresa House. She is said to be dependable, kind, friendly and jumps right in when help is needed without needing direction. She consistently works every Wednesday, 0730-1100, coming in early knowing it is busy then. When there is a special mass in Hospice she is there to help as well as for receptions and at Christmas time, plus, she is the “core” person for the bake sale fundraisers.
She has a long-standing friendship with the Social Worker and works well with the other staff persons. She says she is enriched by the people she meets and cares for and that they give her as much or more than she gives them. Price-Zalba also volunteers at the Sheridan Rd. School, helping with reading, writing and ESL, (English as a second language), and volunteers at her parish, St. John’s in East Lansing.
She said that she and her husband, Jim, have a “blended” family of 4 daughters, 2 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. She and her husband have traveled to Ireland, her favorite, Colorado, New York and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
Her hobbies include dancing, walking, and exercise classes at the YMCA.
Price-Zalba studied Dental Hygiene at Lansing Community College and is retired.
