The Sparrow Women’s Board of Managers and the Sparrow Volunteer Services Department have named Frieda Motcheck of Lansing, as the June Volunteer of the Month. She has been volunteering for Sparrow since her retirement in 1980 – 38 years! She said she always wanted to be a nurse, so volunteering in the Sparrow pre-Surgical Lounge is a pleasure for her. She says it is like a second home. She also serves at the Outpatient Surgical Lounge on the St. Lawrence campus.
Motcheck is said to have a great attitude and is devoted to her volunteer time where she is always willing to help, coming in on Saturdays, is often “on-call” and stays late if necessary. She also has a great relationship with the doctors and nurses. By the way, she is 94 years old!
She grew up in Lansing on a farm, took commercial business in school and worked at the Oldsmobile plant office for salaried personnel for many years followed by 19 years at Lansing Community College in the cashiers’ office, retiring in 1980.
Motcheck is the widow of George Motcheck, who passed away in 2014. They enjoyed traveling together to Europe and the Rockies in the U.S. They adopted two children, David, who lives in Arizona and Karen Ann who resides in London, Ontario and Frieda enjoys her 4 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
The Sparrow Women’s Board of Managers takes great pride in honoring volunteers like Frieda Motcheck who share their time and talent for the benefit of Sparrow’s patients and families. To learn more about volunteering at Sparrow, please visit Sparrow.org or call our office at 517.364.3606, option 1.
