LANSING, Mich. – A University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Ionia ultrasound technician was recently recognized with the health system’s Speak Up Award for acting quickly to potentially save a pregnant patient’s life.
During a routine ultrasound, Megan Holmes realized the patient and her baby may be in danger. Holmes quickly alerted the attending physician, Stephen J. Bhandarkar, M.D., and contacted the radiology reading room. Her quick and decisive actions led to the patient being transported for emergency surgery.
“Thanks to Megan’s quick communication, the patient avoided a total hysterectomy, and other potentially life-threatening complications were prevented,” said Tara Lanz, UM Health-Sparrow Ionia emergency room manager.
“I felt strongly that this was a life-threatening situation, and I did everything I could to help the patient,” said Holmes. “It’s always best to err on the side of caution and raise your concerns.”

The Speak Up Award is given quarterly to a UM Health-Sparrow team member or team for speaking up on behalf of patient and team member safety.
