The Sparrow Women’s Board of Managers and the Volunteer Services Department have named Dorothy Foltyn of Delta Township the September Volunteer of the Month. Foltyn has been a community volunteer on the Archives Committee for 15 years. She was invited to join the group by a good friend and fellow St. Lawrence Nursing School graduate, Joyce Dutcher. These nurses are a valuable part of the committee because they can recall years ago when things were different for the nurses and the hospital. She is glad that these memories are saved and that people are interested in what was then and what is now in the hospital environment and in healthcare. Foltyn volunteers at least two days a month recording historical facts about St. Lawrence Hospital and the nurses. She is said to be a strong member contributing and establishing permanent files in the archives. She even went to Farmington Hills (Mercy Hospital former headquarters), to research and secure much information on nursing, which is now stored in the archives.
It is said that Dorothy Foltyn’s personal experience, knowledge and organization skills have been phenomenal.
Dorothy is the widow of Ernest and they had 2 sons and 1 daughter and now 4 grandchildren. She loves to garden at home and helps in the gardens at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grand Ledge. In her spare time, she enjoys meeting with friends, one on one, to get to know them better.
She grew up in Charlotte and after graduating from nursing school was a part-time surgical R.N. for Dr. Meade and worked 10 years at General Motors in Occupational Health.
The Sparrow Women’s Board of Managers takes great pride in honoring Volunteers like Dorothy Foltyn who share their time and talent for the benefit of Sparrow’s patients and families. To learn more about volunteering at Sparrow, please visit Sparrow.org or call our office at 517.364.3606, option 1.
