LANSING, Mich. - Sparrow has been verified as a Level 1 Trauma Center, the only facility in mid-Michigan to receive such a designation for adult and pediatric patients.
The verification came from a review committee that is part of the American College of Surgeons. This achievement recognizes the trauma center's dedication to providing optimal care for injured patients.
Sparrow's trauma center has the highest certification available. Rapid access to a certified trauma center often provides the best chance for survival and recovery from traumatic injuries, such as motor vehicle accidents, falls, and assaults.
"We have in our hospital teams of physicians, nurses, and surgeons that can respond rapidly to severe injuries associated with all different types of trauma," said Larry Rawsthorne, M.D., Senior Vice President, Medical Affairs.
"This verification confirms that we are doing that in a structured, measured way that meets national standards."
Verified trauma centers must meet specific criteria outlined by the American College of Surgeons and must undergo an on-site review by a team of experts.
Sparrow has trauma surgeons in the hospital 24 hours a day, seven days a week, ready to care for severely injured patients. An operating room is ready at all times for trauma cases.
