LANSING, MI – Sparrow’s partnership with University of Michigan Health is bringing expanded plastic surgery care to Mid-Michigan, including an innovative breast reconstruction procedure that spares muscle and allows for a quicker recovery.
The DIEP flap surgery is one example of the leading-edge procedures that will be offered at the new Sparrow practice that are not available anywhere else in the region. The surgery transfers fat, skin, and blood vessels from the lower belly to rebuild the breast of cancer patients, while minimizing injury to the muscles of the abdominal wall.
The new practice, located at the Sparrow Professional Building in Lansing, integrates the nationally recognized U-M Health plastic surgery program with a local care team so patients can receive the highest quality care close to home. U-M Health’s plastic surgeons are national leaders in cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery.
The partnership will expand or augment the following services at E.W. Sparrow Hospital in Lansing:
- Breast reconstruction and body contouring
- Cosmetic surgery
- General reconstructive surgery
- Skin cancer reconstruction
- Wound care
- Pediatric plastic surgery
In addition to Sparrow, the plastic surgery network includes collaborations with other Michigan hospitals, such as U-M Health-West, Chelsea Hospital, and MyMichigan Health.
A team will work at the practice, led by Andrew Zwyghuizen, M.D., who directs U-M Health’s plastic surgery community network. Noted U-M Health and Sparrow plastic surgeon Paul Cederna, M.D., is a consulting physician for the program and has played a key role in developing and planning the practice.
