LANSING, MI – Sparrow Hospital is extremely proud of the extraordinary team of more than 2,000 Nurses. We ensure our support of their excellent care of Patients through innovative and benchmark level Nurse-to-Patient staffing levels, on-going professional development, and workplace safety programs. Sparrow aspires to be the employer of choice for Nurses through the following initiatives:
- Staffing: Sparrow Hospital worked with the Michigan Nurses Association in 2010 to mutually agree upon prescribed Nurse-to-Patient staffing levels. By design, Sparrow Hospital Nurses are enabled to spend more time with each Patient.
- Hiring: In 2016, Sparrow Hospital received over 1,500 applications from external Nurse candidates and hired 284 Nurses. At the same time, Sparrow’s turnover rate for Nurses continues to be far lower than state and national averages.
- Professional Development: Sparrow Hospital makes significant investments in continuing education for Nurses. The amount of information related to healthcare services increases every day. Continuing education for each Nurse helps support our goal of delivering care consistent with Patient-centered, evidence-based best practices. Sparrow has tripled the amount of continuing education support provided to Nurses in the past three years. In addition, in 2016 Sparrow assisted over 300 Registered Nurses to actively pursue Bachelor of Science Degrees in Nursing.
- Safety: Sparrow Hospital has invested in security measures and systems to protect Sparrow Nurses in the performance of their Patient care assignments. In addition, Sparrow is a leader in reducing injuries from lifting and moving Patients, a potential hazard for Nurses and other Caregivers. Sparrow is proud to provide a dedicated lift team (24 hours each day) to assist Nurses and support other staff with safely lifting and moving Patients. Sparrow has seen a marked decline in lift injuries as a result.
Sparrow is proud of each Nurse and his or her many achievements. Each month, a Sparrow Hospital Nurse is recognized with a DAISY Award for providing exceptional Patient care. Nominations come from Nursing peers, leaders and Patients and their families sparrow.org/daisy. The DAISY Award is one of many ways that Sparrow Hospital supports and recognizes its outstanding Nursing staff members.
