Ronald Horowitz, M.D., longtime Medical Director of Sparrow Laboratories, is retiring after serving more than 35 years at Sparrow.
Dr. Horowitz led Sparrow Laboratories to become one of the largest hospital-based outreach labs in the country and was named to the Sparrow Physician Hall of Fame in 2011. An esteemed pathologist, he has served as a president of the Ingham County Medical Society and is a Michigan delegate to the College of American Pathologists' House of Delegates.
"Dr. Horowitz is a true pillar in our Medical Staff and has had a profoundly positive impact on Patients, Physicians, Nurses and Staff," said Dennis Swan, Sparrow President and CEO.
Since 1995, Dr. Horowitz has both served as Medical Director of Sparrow Laboratories, which provides services to hospital inpatients and outpatients and as Director of Sparrow Regional Laboratories, which provides laboratory services to Physicians and their Patients throughout mid-Michigan.
Dr. Horowitz has been a member of the Medical Staff Executive Committee for more than 25 years. He has been a member of the Medical Staff By-Laws Committee for 15 years and its Chairman for the past 10 years.
"Dr. Horowitz is a Physician and leader who has earned the respect and admiration of his peers at Sparrow and throughout the state," said Brian D. Schroeder, M.D., Sparrow's Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer. "He has built his career around excellence, and we are thankful for his many years of service to our Patients."
Along with Anne Cauley, formerly of the Michigan Health and Hospital insurance Company, Dr. Horowitz was involved in the development and implementation of the Associate in Health Care Risk Management and Quality Review academic program. The program provides education and training opportunities for health professionals with the responsibility of responding to the changing needs of hospitals and Patients. The program was underwritten by the Michigan Hospital Association Insurance Company. Academic credit was awarded by Lansing Community College. There were more than 150 participants who received certification from 1993 to 2002.
During Dr. Horowitz's time as Medical Director, Sparrow Laboratories has achieved national recognition as a Molecular Center of Excellence. There are only 33 hospital-based laboratories with this designation in the United States. This designation recognizes Sparrow Laboratories efforts to bring molecular diagnostic discoveries from the research laboratory to care for Patients. This program promises to enhance the scope and effectiveness of health care in the future.
