Sparrow honors ICU Manager with DAISY Leader Award

Published: February 28, 2023

LANSING, MI – An E.W. Sparrow Hospital Intensive Care manager has been recognized with the hospital’s DAISY Leader Award for her compassion and dedication to helping our sickest patients.

Christine Wilson, who works in the Neuro-Trauma Intensive Care Unit, holds herself and others accountable and leads by example. Whether it’s collecting money for someone who lost a loved one, or putting together a gift basket for a patient who had surgery, or spending holidays on the unit, Wilson is always the first to step up to offer a helping hand. She has also made great strides in leading her to team to reduce common infections, keeping her patient safe.

“This recognition reinforces that the smallest acts of kindness have the biggest impact,” Wilson said. “The nurses and caregivers in the Neuro-Trauma ICU are extraordinary individuals who provide excellent care to every patient every time.”

The DAISY Award is an international program that rewards and celebrates the extraordinary, compassionate, and skillful care given by nurses every day. However, the DAISY Nurse Leader Award was created for a different purpose – to shine a light on those who don’t typically have direct patient care as part of their work, as well as those who create an environment where compassionate care thrives.

Wilson received a certificate of recognition, a DAISY pin to wear at work, and beautiful serpentine stone sculpture carved by the artists of the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe. The special “Healer’s Touch” sculpture, designed for leaders, depicts the relationship nursing managers have with their caregivers and embraces the relationship nurses have with their patients.

Nurses and nursing leaders are nominated for the award throughout the year by patients and patients’ families.
