Sparrow today celebrated the grand opening of the new Sparrow Ionia Hospital, the first new hospital in the mid-Michigan region in decades.
Sitting on 43 acres at 3565 S. State Road (M-66), just south of the Ionia County Airport, the all-new, state-of-the-art 65,000-square-foot critical access hospital features 18 all-private inpatient rooms. It replaces the current Sparrow Ionia Hospital, which was originally built in 1953.
The hospital also offers outpatient services including a Chemotherapy and Infusion Lab, General and Fluoroscopy Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, CT, Digital Mammography, Ultrasound and Bone Density, an Emergency Department with private Patient rooms, triage area, two trauma rooms, a Surgery Department with two operating rooms, administrative offices and board room, a cafeteria and a community education center.
The $25 million project, which broke ground in October 2013, was built to LEED-certification standards as Sparrow moves to be a better steward of our resources while creating healing environments for our Patients. The facility will open for Patients on Sunday, June 14.
“Having a state-of-the-art facility that draws talented new Physicians to the area is an important piece in a thriving community,” said Bill Roeser, President and CEO of Sparrow Ionia Hospital. “I’m excited for what this new hospital means for providing access to the latest technology and nationally recognized care for the residents of Ionia County now and long into the future.”
The grand opening ceremony included a keynote address by Ionia Mayor Dan Balice, and taped messages from Gov. Rick Snyder, Lt. Gov. Brian Calley, a native of Ionia County, and U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow.
“We are in the midst of a time of exciting change at Sparrow - growing, increasing our capacity, expanding our services, and extending our reach to care for our Patients throughout the region,” said Dennis Swan, Sparrow President and CEO. “Our success is a direct reflection of the faith people have placed in Sparrow to care for their families.”
Sparrow has undertaken a significant investment in the region, more than $285 million in construction and information technology projects over a five-year period, as we continue to transform care, implement best practices, and deliver nationally recognized care.
