Leica Microsystems’ MyVeo headset enhances cranial and spine procedures by providing surgeons with greater depth of field while offering immersive, high-resolution fluorescent filters that are important in vascular and tumor surgery. The technology enhances precision, accuracy, and safety while also supporting collaboration in the operating room by providing nurses and trainees with the same visual perspective as the surgeon.

“This new feature is a game changer for neurosurgery, allowing the simultaneous integration of multiple areas of augmented reality within the surgeon’s vision. This allows for improved outcomes, such as better extent of resection, and safer surgery to mark off critical neurovascular structures” says UM Health-Sparrow neurosurgeon Michael Karsy, M.D., a specialist in skull base and spine procedures.

Nasser Yaghi, a neurosurgeon and director of neurosurgical oncology at UM Health-Sparrow who also uses the technology, said, “This new microscope with its cranial navigation capabilities, combined with Gleolan (5-ALA) for florescent-guided surgery, allows for the highest-level brain tumor surgery, which translates to improved overall survival for brain tumor patients. The microscope also enhances minimally invasive spine surgery capabilities, which reduces post-operative recovery time for patients.”

UM Health-Sparrow’s use of this technology reflects its continued commitment to providing the highest level of neurological care in Mid-Michigan as part of the Neuro Care Network, which was formed through the joint operating agreement (JOA) between University of Michigan Health and MSU Health Care in July 2024. The collaboration unites leading neurosurgeons and neurologists from both institutions, ensuring that patients receive the most advanced care close to home.

“Bringing this innovative technology to UM Health-Sparrow and the Neuro Care Network is a testament to our commitment to innovation and to enhancing precision, safety and ultimately, patient outcomes,” said Margaret Dimond, Regional President, U-M Health.
