LANSING, MI – Sparrow Health System board member James Herbert, whose philanthropy has had an immeasurable impact on Sparrow and the health of the Mid-Michigan community, last night received this year’s Community Service Award from the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce.
The award honors outstanding individuals who give their time and expertise to the community above and beyond their own field of endeavor, and demonstrate excellence, creativity, and initiative in all they do.
Living by the message of, “To whom much is given, much is expected,” Herbert has built an incredible legacy in business and philanthropy. After growing up on family cotton and cattle farms, Herbert went on to found Lansing’s Neogen Corp., which has almost $1 billion in annual sales.
Sparrow Health System board member and donor James Herbert has received this year’s Community Service Award from the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce.
In 2014, Herbert and his wife, Judi, both cancer survivors, donated $2.5 million toward construction of the Sparrow Herbert-Herman Cancer Center, which opened in 2017. The couple later made a $5-million donation to establish the Genomics Endowment for Diagnosis and Treatment of Cancer at the Sparrow Foundation. The donation is the largest gift in the history of Sparrow Health System. The Herberts have supported numerous other organizations throughout Mid-Michigan and nationwide.
Herbert was honored with the Community Service Award at a ceremony on Wednesday, May 10. Previous recipients include many friends of Sparrow, such as James Butler (2003), Dorothy Maxwell (2006), Debby Harrison (2013), Pat McPharlin (2014), and Jim Robinson (2017).
Sparrow also wants to congratulate SHS Board member Jeff Benson, President and CEO of Case Credit Union, after Case was recognized at the event with the Diversity Star Award.
