Pap-O-Rama, a free cervical cancer screening program co-sponsored by Sparrow and the Sparrow Foundation's Women Working Wonders (W3), will be held Saturday, Oct. 19, at Alliance Obstetrics and Gynecology, 1560 Turf Lane, East Lansing.
The program, in its second year, provides a free Pap test for uninsured women in Ingham and Clinton counties who meet certain criteria. Cervical cancer has no symptoms at its earliest stages and routine screening is key to early detection.
In order to participate, women must be between the ages of 21-64, have not had a Pap exam in the last three years, and currently without healthcare insurance. Appointments will be held from 9 a.m. to noon and must be scheduled in advance by calling 517.364.3685.
Hundreds of women are diagnosed with cervical cancer in Michigan every year, though the disease is preventable through proper screening. Treatment is more likely to be successful when detected before the onset of symptoms. The economic downturn has made it harder, however, for some women to get the preventative care they need.
Besides Sparrow and W3, Pap-O-Rama is co-sponsored by Capital Area Pathologists.
In conjunction with the Pap-O-Rama event, Sparrow is providing a limited number of free mammograms for uninsured women at our Sparrow Ramblewood Imaging Center, 1575 Ramblewood Drive, East Lansing. Women must be ages 40-64 and have not had a mammogram in at least 12 months.
Call 517.364.3685 to make an appointment for a mammogram.
Over the last 10 years, W3 has raised more than $1 million to support women's health initiatives in mid-Michigan. The fundraising efforts of W3 ensure the ongoing advancement of medical treatment and care for Michigan women, in addition to facilitation of educational outreach initiatives by W3 volunteers and committee members.
