A Sparrow Clinton Hospital Nurse’s special care of a surgical Patient helped earn him the hospital’s DAISY Award for exceptional nursing skills.
Terry Simison, RN, of St. Johns gained high praise from his Patients for his ability to make them feel comfortable and relaxed before and after surgery.
“Terry had a light-hearted manner that helped me relax at a time when I was very anxious,” wrote one of the two Patients who nominated him for the DAISY Award.
Simison joined the Sparrow family in 2012 as a member of the Sparrow Clinton Surgical team. Prior to earning his nursing degree, he worked for more than 30 years as a millwright.
“I enjoy talking to Patients, and reassuring them and their families,” said Simison. “Easing their anxiety is my favorite part of the job. Taking care of lives is very rewarding – it’s all about our Patients.”
The DAISY Award is an international program that rewards and celebrates the extraordinary, compassionate and skillful care given by Nurses every day. Nurses are nominated by their Patients and families.
Beth Daugherty, RN, Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer at Sparrow Clinton, joined DAISY Committee Nurses in presenting Simison with the award, a certificate of recognition, a DAISY pin, and a hand-carved sculpture entitled The Healer’s Touch. In addition, a DAISY Foundation banner signed by Simison will be posted in the hospital.
Nurse nominees Karen Penner, BSN; Nichole Pierson, BSN; and Brenda Simmer, RN, also were recognized. Each received a DAISY pin and flowers.
“DAISY Award nominees personify the remarkable Patient experience at Sparrow Clinton Hospital,” says Daugherty. “They provide extraordinary, skilled care with great compassion every day. Terry does an exceptional job and we are pleased to recognize him.”
Sparrow Clinton Hospital honors two Nurses each year as DAISY Award winners. To nominate an exceptional Sparrow Clinton Nurse, complete and return a form from one of The DAISY Foundation displays at the hospital.
