The new Cancer Center facility and its programs will be built upon the principles of Patient- and family-centered care. Sparrow is committed to offering timely and convenient access to radiation, medical and surgical oncologists and a full range of clinical and family support services. The facility and programs are being designed with team medicine and Patient- and family engagement in mind. In addition, the Herbert-Herman Cancer Center will play an integral role with Sparrow’s continuing relationship with the Mayo Clinic Care Network.
“As a cancer survivor I have witnessed firsthand the tremendous things Sparrow Caregivers and Physicians do to help people who are going through one of the most trying times of their lives,” said Judith Herbert. “But just as noticeable is that they need more space. We have so many wonderful Caregivers in place – among the best in the world – and with a new cancer center we can give them a facility that supports the innovative care they provide.”
James Herman, M.D., Medical Director, Sparrow Cancer Center, noted, “Cancer affects one in three people. Sparrow is caring for 2,000 new Patients each year, but our facility is land locked. This facility means a state-of-the-art cancer center in our community. We’ll be able to give our Patients the environment they deserve.”
“Sparrow and this region have deep roots in philanthropy,” said Dennis Swan, Sparrow President and CEO. “These two families are continuing to strengthen the legacy of giving at Sparrow, which dates back to Mr. Edward W. Sparrow’s original gifts in the early 1900’s. We are deeply honored that the Herberts and Hermans share our passion for extraordinary care and service to people throughout our region.”
The announcement of this $2.5-million gift represents the start of the public phase of the Cancer Center campaign. During the silent phase, over $5 million in pledges have been raised.
“We are inspired by the willingness of the region to step forward to ensure outstanding staff and facilities to provide best practice care as close to home as possible,” said Stella Cash, Vice President of Development & Strategic Partnerships at Sparrow. “That kind of thinking – an enduring and expanding collaboration with the people who live, work and raise their families in the region – is how we will continue to deliver the very best care to every Patient, every time.”
This project is a prime example of how Sparrow is working to transform care and pursuing best practices to improve the health of the growing number of communities we serve.
