Jim and Natalie Matthews with their children Alex, Will and Kit Maxine, present the check to Stephen Guertin, M.D., Medical Director of the Sparrow Children's Center.

The Matthews family presented a check for more than $166,000 to Sparrow last week after holding this year's Max's Race.

The amount is the total raised since the first Max's Race was held in 2005 to support the Sparrow Children's Center. The race is held in memory of Max Matthews, who died when he was 6 years old from complications from bacterial spinal meningitis.

The Maxwell C. Matthews Foundation was created by his parents following Max's death. The Foundation's mission is to create hope for kids and their families who, due to unfortunate situations and events, are in need of extra medical, professional and emotional assistance.
