The Sparrow Women’s Board of Managers and the Sparrow Volunteer Services department have named Margaret Kennedy, RN, of Lansing the November volunteer of the month.
Kennedy has volunteered with Sparrow for 17 years with the LifeTime group. This group is made up of nurses who take blood pressure readings at the Lansing Mall and the Meridian Mall and various senior centers around the Lansing area. Kennedy retired from Sparrow where she was an operating room nurse for many years. She also worked in recovery.
Margaret is very dependable and shares her experiences with others at their group’s meetings. The nurses meet once a month and call themselves the “Busy Hands Circle.” She also volunteers at her church.
Margaret was born and grew up in Northern Ontario, Canada, and graduated from Thunder Bay Ontario Nurses’ School. After moving to Sault Ste. Marie for work, she met her husband who was stationed in the military there. They were transferred to Lansing and then had three daughters. They were very young when her husband died of cancer. Her daughters now live in Oregon and in Lansing and she has three granddaughters.
After all those years of being a busy mother and nurse, Margaret knew that when retirement came she wanted to keep busy, be out and about, and help others. She is another example of how giving to others as a Sparrow volunteer can enrich your life, give it purpose and pleasure, and use the talents you have to offer.
