The Sparrow Women’s Board of Managers and the Sparrow Volunteer Services Department have named Al Evans of Guest Services at the St. Lawrence campus the January volunteer of the month. Al has volunteered there for over 13 years.
He has contributed in many ways to improve the former Escort and Information area and the now “Guest Services” area which includes the outpatient Surgical Lounge volunteers. He single -handedly wrote an instruction manual to handle situations that come up for the volunteers and also questions visitors and patients may ask.
Evans was a major contributor in the time and talent it took to combine the two leagues with their individual schedules for volunteers, plus training needed to learn the tasks required for both leagues. All accomplished with a positive attitude and help from the other volunteers.
Evans volunteers every Wednesday morning and whenever a fill in is needed. AND, he brings his homemade caramels to share with others.
He was introduced to Sparrow and it’s volunteer opportunities by his neighbor, Melissa Sherry, Volunteer Services Director! He has helped her by serving on several committees, such as possible volunteer uniform colors, and Behavior Health issues.
Evans is married to Shirley and they have 2 sons, 6 grandchildren and 3 Great Grandchildren. They love theatre and travel to many areas to attend them. They have also traveled to Hawaii, Alaska and several states in the West. He has coached soccer for 8 years.
He grew up in Lansing and now lives in Lansing Township. He worked at the Olofsson Corporation as a computer programmer for 36 years.
The Sparrow Women’s Board takes great pride in honoring volunteers like Al Evans who share their time and talent for the benefit of Sparrows patients and families, To learn more about volunteering at Sparrow, please visit Sparrow.org or call our office at 517.364.3606, option 1.
