IONIA, MI – Sparrow Ionia Hospital has honored two caregivers for their compassionate and dedicated approach toward patients and their team members.
Surgical Services Nurse Hally Reule, RN, was named DAISY Award honoree based on a patient nomination for her considerate and understanding character during the patient’s recent stay. Reule has worked for Sparrow since 2015.
“Hally is an amazing nurse who is adored by both patients and staff,” said Sparrow Ionia Hospital Surgical Services Manager Courtney Dow, RN. “It will not surprise anyone who knows her to hear that she went above and beyond her responsibilities as a nurse to help one of her patients succeed outside of the hospital. She truly cares for her patients.”

Nominated by fellow caregivers, Sparrow Medical Group (SMG) Ionia Medical Assistant Katelyn VanDerske, MA, received the BEE Award for transcending expectations to support caregivers whenever and wherever needed to make the entire team better. VanDerske has worked at Sparrow Ionia since 2019.
“Katelyn is very versatile and knowledgeable in her role,” said SMG Ionia Practice Manager Marsha Nemeth, RN. “She is able to shift her responsibilities from the family practice to the hospital to work with ease.”
The DAISY Award is an international program that rewards and celebrates the extraordinary, compassionate, and skillful care given by nurses every day. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. The DAISY Award is a national program created in memory of J. Patrick Barnes who died in 1999 of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura, or ITP, at age 33. His family was overwhelmed by the skillful and compassionate nurses who cared for him, and the DAISY Foundation and award were created as an expression of their gratitude.
The BEE Award recognizes excellence among clinical support caregivers who work alongside nursing teams to deliver quality, compassionate care. BEE is an acronym for Be Exceptional Every day. Acknowledging the strength behind teamwork, the BEE Award is given in conjunction with the DAISY Award to symbolize the relationship between nursing and clinical support caregivers.
