Caregivers at Sparrow Carson Hospital have an easier way to care for Patients with veins that are difficult to locate, thanks to Carson City-Crystal and Fulton high school basketball teams.
Girls and boys junior varsity and varsity players from the two schools recently teamed up in a friendly competition to raise $2,000 to assist the hospital in the purchase of an infrared vein finder that makes it easier to locate veins for IVs. The device makes procedures more comfortable for Patients, reflecting Sparrow’s mission to be a leader in treating Patients through innovation and quality, compassionate care.
The day-long event, named Battle on 57, is in its second year. Last year, the teams raised money to buy a commercial grade rocking chair for the Sparrow Carson’s Obstetric Department. The rocking chair provides new mothers a comfortable spot to sit and rock their baby during their stay.
Apart from the basketball games, Battle on 57, named after highway M-57 that runs through Fulton Township and Carson City, features free throw and center court competitions. The teams raise money for Sparrow Carson through donations, raffles and concessions.
“I was impressed by how many young people made donations during the event. That behavior speaks to this entire community’s level of commitment to Sparrow Carson Hospital and the Patients we serve,” said Shelly Weaver, Carson Foundation Executive Director.
