We want to help you get to know our regional and E.W. Sparrow Hospital leaders better. We are showcasing short introduction videos and responses to questions that highlight who these leaders are, where they came from, and what their priorities are as part of the regional and local structure of University of Michigan Health. And you may learn a surprising fact or two about them!
Our next profile is on Constance "Connie" O’Malley, regional chief operating officer. See her video below.
How would you summarize your new position?
I would summarize my new position as responsible for the community hospitals, facilities and construction for all hospitals (7), home care, hospice, palliative care, DME, Sparrow Specialty Hospital, and health clubs (AL!VE and MAC). My responsibilities include working to bring our region together in the care for our patients across the enterprise, with a focus on growth initiatives and efficiencies as a system.
What are your top three goals for the region or the hospital?
Continue to drive efficiencies to reach our break-even targets for this year, work to develop a regional care delivery system and work on growth initiatives, including the E.W. Sparrow Hospital expansion project.
What is one thing you've learned about Sparrow and/or University of Michigan Health West that surprised you?
I am surprised at the depth of the clinical services at both facilities. University of Michigan Health-West has phenomenal cardiac and neuro (stroke) services, as well as Sparrow having great depth in many clinical services including primary care, cardiac, pediatrics, women’s services and NICU! Our teams are poised to continue to grow, and I am excited to be part of that growth!
What are you most looking forward to in your new role?
I am most excited to increase services for our patients and families in our market as well as to provide the Michigan Sparrow difference to our communities. Sparrow and UM Health-West as well as the community hospitals have provided exceptional service to our communities for many years and we now have a statewide reach for all services!
Where is your favorite place in Michigan to vacation?
My favorite place to vacation in Michigan is the Traverse City area. For years, we took the kids up to this area and stayed in a cottage for a week. It was a terrific family vacation and one that they remember to this day.
What book or movie did you last read or watch?
“Leave the World Behind” was a fascinating movie depicting our world today and the reliance we have on electricity, satellites as well as other services. With the advent of AI our world will continue to change, and this movie was interesting to me to learn how our world will change in the future. This, of course will influence health care, and we are seeing it in services such as radiology.
Anything else, either personal or professional, that you’d like to add?
I am excited to join the Sparrow/West team and have been warmly welcomed by all. It’s a terrific team that is ready for more and I can’t wait to see what our future brings!
