Sparrow welcomed nearly a dozen high school students from the Future Nurses Club of Lansing on Tuesday, July 14. The club is a community initiative sponsored by the MSU College of Nursing for Lansing School District high school students.
Through a partnership with the Lansing School District, the students meet twice a month to focus on nursing, effective study habits, time management, and healthy living activities. Each summer the students also attend a one-week summer camp for nursing. During that week, Sparrow hosts a campus visit to familiarize them with a hospital setting and to provide an opportunity for them to meet firsthand with Nurses working in various roles here at Sparrow.
The students toured the hospital and also received valuable career advice and information from Sparrow Caregivers such as Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer Mary Lou Wesley, RN, MSN; Vice President of Nursing Christine Jodoin, MSN, RN, NE-BC; Diversity/Inclusion Director Jacqueline Thomas-Hall; Nurse Recruiter Chelsea Wallace; Nursing Performance and Improvement Specialist Debbie Lopez, BS, RN; Team Lead and Nurse Recruiter Megan Wills; and Diversity/Inclusion Community Advocate Lori Adams Simon.
The annual visit is also a great opportunity for Sparrow to form valuable relationships with those who may be future Sparrow Caregivers, said Thomas-Hall.
Sparrow Health System is a sponsor of this community initiative through its Diversity/Inclusion Department. The director of the Future Nurses Club program is Kendra Elam, BSN, RN.
