Free cancer screening event for uninsured women

Published: Oct. 17, 2012

Pap-O-Rama, a free cervical cancer screening program co-sponsored by Sparrow and the Sparrow Foundation's Women Working Wonders (W3), will be held Saturday, Oct. 20, at Alliance Obstetrics and Gynecology, 1560 Turf Lane, East Lansing.

The first-time program will provide a free Pap test for uninsured women in Ingham and Clinton counties. Appointments, which must be scheduled in advance, will be held from 9 a.m.-noon. Appointments may be made by calling 517.853.2330. In order to participate, women must be between the ages of 21-64 and have not had a Pap exam in the last year.

Hundreds of women are diagnosed with cervical cancer in Michigan every year, though the disease is preventable through proper screening. The economic downturn has made it harder, however, for some women to get the preventative care they need.

Besides Sparrow and W3, Pap-O-Rama is co-sponsored by Clinton County, Ingham County, Capital Area Pathologists, and Dean Transportation.

Over the last 10 years, W3 has raised more than $1 million to support women's health initiatives in mid-Michigan. The fundraising efforts of W3 ensure the ongoing advancement of medical treatment and care for Michigan women, in addition to facilitation of educational outreach initiatives by W3 volunteers and committee members.
