When a Patient who has experienced a sexual assault comes to Sparrow, a specially trained Nurse such as Bethanie De La Ossa is ready to provide the care they need while connecting them with community resources necessary for healing the body, mind and soul.
De La Ossa, RN, BSN, CEN, CPEN, SANE, who serves as a coordinator for Sparrow's Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) program, is being recognized for her dedication to her Patients with the RN Caregiver Spotlight for April, which is also Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Sparrow's RN Caregiver Spotlight recognizes one Nurse each month and highlights his/her accomplishments.
"What's so rewarding about this job is the one-on-one connection with the Patient," said De La Ossa. "These Patients truly appreciate our care and the service we provide. It's very rewarding, the feedback we get from our Patients."
De La Ossa has worked at Sparrow for nearly 18 years, and has served as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner for a decade. She said she really relies on her fellow SANE Nurses, since they see Patients who have gone through such difficult situations.
"The compassion and care our Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners provide to our Patients is so valuable," said Missy Brown, RN, BSN, St. Lawrence Emergency Department and SANE manager. "They bring very sensitive, focused care to people who have experienced a traumatic event, and as coordinator Beth really leads this effort."
Sparrow's SANE program is available 24 hours a day and works collaboratively with police, prosecutors, Child Protective Services and community advocacy services to provide the best and most appropriate care. The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner conducts medical forensic examinations and can serve as an expert witness. For more information on the program, visit Sparrow.org/SANE.
