The Sparrow Women’ Board of Managers and the Sparrow Volunteer Services Department have named Ruth Bergh of Mason the December Volunteer of the Month. She has been volunteering in the TLC Critical Care unit for 12 years after an invitation from another volunteer to come to Sparrow.
Since she is a “retired” nurse, (They never really retire) she has it in her nature to help others who are going through a tough time, trying to stay positive for them and comfort them in their illnesses. Bergh is said to take her work to heart and is very empathetic with families and has high standards. She has a true connection with other volunteers and staff. She is team oriented and is a recruiter and trainer for the group.
Bergh also volunteers at her church, Holt United Methodist, singing in the choir and ringing hand bells and also volunteers at Colt School.
She grew up in Midland where her Dad worked at Dow Chemical and her Mom was a teacher and came to M.S.U. to earn her B.S.N. in Nursing. Then worked for the State of Michigan as a Nursing Home Surveyor and also practiced nursing at Ingham Medical and Sparrow Hospitals as well as Hospice and home health care.
With her husband, Daniel, (now deceased), they had 4 children and then 11 grandchildren and now 2 great Grandchildren.
In her spare time, she is an avid knitter, plays bells and string bass, does jigsaw puzzles and travels every Spring to Jamaica for a month with her twin sister.
The Sparrow Women’s Board of Managers takes great pride in honoring volunteers like Ruth Bergh who share their time and talent for the benefit of Sparrow’s patients and families. To learn more about volunteering at Sparrow, please visit Sparrow.org or call our office at 517.364.3606, option 1.
