It has taken some time, and a lot of collective effort, but the families and kids in one local neighborhood have a new park to enjoy.
After the closure and repurposing of Bingham Elementary School (future site of the Sparrow Plaza and Herbert-Herman Cancer Center), the community lost green space and a place for the kids to play. Working together, Sparrow, neighborhood and community leaders, and the Ingham County Land Bank identified a location, razed an abandoned house, and built a new playground.
John Shaski, Sparrow Government Relations Officer, and Denise Kelly, President, Association for the Bingham Community (ABC), spearheaded the project.
The new park, located at 1112 Prospect Street in Lansing, offers a play structure, benches, bike rack and open space for kicking a ball or running around.
A celebratory picnic for the neighborhood and those involved in the project is slated for spring.
