ST. JOHNS, MI – Mariah Hesse, chief nursing officer at Sparrow Carson and Clinton hospitals, has been named Michigan’s 2023 “Community Star” by the National Organization of State Office of Rural Health (NOSORH).
Hesse was nominated by the Michigan Center for Rural Health, in conjunction with the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health (NOSORH) and National Rural Health Day (NRHD). As a Community Starr, Hesse helps tell the story of the “Power of Rural” and how connecting people with resources helps communities to thrive.
The official NRHD website, PowerOfRural.org, features Hesse alongside Community Stars across the nation. The Community Star Recognition Program was established in 2015 in conjunction with NRHD to tell the stories of people and organizations who make a difference in rural communities.

“Mariah is very deserving of this award. Her dedication to providing high quality health care in a rural community is unmatched. We are truly blessed to have Mariah service our communities at Sparrow Carson and Clinton,” said Mark Brisboe, president, Sparrow Carson and Clinton hospitals.
Hesse has made countless contributions to Sparrow Clinton during her tenure, including leading a journey to American Nurses Credentialing Center Pathway to Excellence and increasing access to care by leading the implementation of many new specialty services for patients. She’s served as president of the Michigan Critical Access Hospital for Quality Network (MiCA QN) for the past six years.
“I’m honored to be nominated and recognized for my passion and advocacy for rural communities. There are so many people that I have a privilege to collaborate with that are also deserving of this recognition in impacting the ‘Power of Rural,’” Hesse said.
Thank you, Mariah, for your compassion and dedication to our Community Hospitals!
