Stroke Outcomes
The performance measures in the tables below were developed by the Joint Commission in partnership with the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA) and show how UM Health-Sparrow Lansing compares against state and national benchmarks as well as American Heart Association recommendations.
Timing is critical for treating patients with ischemic stroke. The table below compares UM Health-Sparrow Lansing’s median time of 40 minutes to give Thrombolytic treatment to the American Heart Association goal (less than 60 minutes); the national benchmark of 45 minutes; and the Michigan Benchmark of 45 minutes.
The chart also shows UM Health-Sparrow Lansing’s percentage of eligible patients treated within 60 minutes of arrival (95.2%), 45 minutes of arrival (81.2%), and 30 minutes of arrival (29.5%) as compared to the AHA goal (85%, 75%, and 50%) national benchmark (86.4%, 65%, and 22.9%) and Michigan benchmark (84.8%, 60.8%, and 31.6%).

Procedure Outcomes
Those who are not getting better with clot-busting medication can be considered for minimally invasive procedures to remove the clot from clogged vessels.
The procedure outcomes below show UM Health-Sparrow Lansing's percentage of major complications as compared to the Joint Commission target for four stroke-related procedures:
- Symptomatic carotid endarterectomy and carotid artery stenting: 1/59 = 1.7% as compared to Joint Commission target of <6%
- Asymptomatic carotid endarterectomy and carotid artery stenting: 1/46 = 2.2% as compared to Joint Commission target of <3%
- Diagnostic angiogram: 1/176 = 0.5% as compared to Joint Commission target of <1%
Procedures | Complications | Patients | % | TJC benchmark |
---|---|---|---|---|
2022 Asymptomatic Carotid Stent and Carotid Endartectomy | 1 | 46 | 2.2% | <3% |
2022 Symptomatic Carotid Stent and Carotid Endartectomy | 1 | 59 | 1.7% | <6% |
