Anesthesiology

Our team of experienced, fellowship-trained anesthesiologists partner with our team of expert physicians to administer the care that you need here at UM Health-Sparrow. They are trained in specific areas of anesthesia care such as pediatric, cardiac, and pain management, and are focused on anticipating and providing for your individual needs. Our anesthesiologists work closely and collaboratively with your UM Health-Sparrow team to make sure you receive the care and pain management you need before, during and after your procedure, following strict protocols and safety measures to ensure your safe and successful recovery.

A UM Health-Sparrow caregiver will contact you before a procedure to ask questions regarding your medical and surgical history, medications, side effects or previous complications with anesthesia, and any other preoperative questions.

You will receive a call the day before your procedure confirming your arrival time.

The day of your surgery, you will meet with an anesthesia provider and other caregivers to again discuss your medical history and medication use. The provider will also explain the plan for delivering anesthesia pre-procedure and what to expect. During the procedure, the provider will monitor your health, including oxygen, organ function and other brain and body functions.

You may receive antibiotics, pain medications, and/or anti-anxiety medications in preparation for procedure.

Be prepared to answer many of the same questions multiple times before the procedure, such as body site of the procedure and any medication allergies. This repetitive process is completed to ensure quality and safety.

After your procedure is complete, you will be taken to a recovery room where the anesthesiology team will continue to care for you and manage any pain and discomfort once you are awake. The team will maintain your comfort until you are ready to be discharged home.

Anesthesia medications are different for each patient. The type of anesthesia is determined by the patient’s condition, current health, and the procedure being performed.
