Flu season typically begins as early as October and continues as late as May. There are two important things to keep in mind: Getting a flu vaccination to help prevent the flu and where to go for care if you think you have the flu.

A flu shot is recommended for anyone six months or older. Getting the vaccine not only protects you, but also protects those around you who may be more vulnerable to the virus, such as children and the elderly.

If you have flu-like symptoms, go to your primary care doctor or a University of Michigan Health Urgent Care location. Avoid the Emergency Department unless you have an extremely high fever, difficulty breathing or another life-threatening symptom.

Flu shots for children and high-dose shots for those over 65 are available during routine Primary Care check-ups as well as at Urgent Care locations.
